Who will carry out your work

Our Wills & Probate team includes:

  • Claire Myatt — Director & Solicitor, qualified 2010, Head of Conveyancing
  • Samuel Highcock — Director & Solicitor, qualified 2015
  • Lucy Curtis — Solicitor, qualified 2026
  • Ann-Marie Winfield — Cilex Paralegal, experienced will writer

Your matter will be allocated to whoever is appropriate given its complexity and the team's availability, and we'll confirm who is handling your file at the outset. We don't charge estate administration fees on top of our probate work.

Likely timescale

Probate timescales vary considerably depending on the size and complexity of the estate — a simple estate can be dealt with in a few months, while more complex estates (property sales, multiple assets, Inheritance Tax) can take a year or more. We'll give you a realistic personalised estimate once we understand your circumstances.

Assumptions — this quotation is based on the following:

  • Estate value: Where probate is selected, the quotation assumes the estate is under ÂŖ5,000 (no court fee payable). If the estate value is different, the court fee will change accordingly.
  • Tax: We are not authorised to give tax advice. Please check any Inheritance Tax or other tax position with HMRC, an accountant or a tax adviser.
  • IHT: The estate is not subject to Inheritance Tax, or an IHT400 return is not required. Where IHT is applicable, additional time and costs may be incurred.
  • Property: Any property in the estate is in England or Wales. Overseas property or assets require separate advice.
  • Executors / Administrators: There is one executor or administrator. Additional executors or a disputed estate will affect the time and cost involved.
  • Uncontested: The estate is not subject to any dispute, challenge to the will, or claims by creditors beyond normal estate liabilities.
  • Wills: Standard will with no complex trust arrangements, foreign assets, or business interests requiring special provisions.

Scope: This quotation is for a straightforward matter. Should complexity arise, fees will be reviewed and you will be notified of any change in advance.

Validity: This quotation is valid for one month from the date of issue.

Wills: Prices shown are for simple Wills. If your Will requires trusts, business provisions, or other complex clauses, please call us to discuss.

LPAs: The OPG registration fee (ÂŖ92 per LPA) is set by the government and is in addition to our fees.

Probate — Estate Administration: Obtaining the Grant of Probate is a fixed fee as quoted. The subsequent administration of the estate (collecting assets, paying debts, distributing the estate) is charged at an hourly rate, which will vary depending on the complexity, number of accounts, beneficiaries and other factors. We will provide a separate estimate for estate administration work.

Later copies: Additional Grant copies ordered after the application are ÂŖ16 each.

About Lasting Powers of Attorney

An LPA lets you appoint trusted people (your "attorneys") to make decisions on your behalf if you lose mental capacity.

LPAs must be made while you are mentally capable — they cannot be set up after capacity is lost. We strongly recommend making both types together.

Inheritance Tax (IHT)

IHT is generally payable at 40% on the value of an estate above the nil-rate band threshold:

If IHT is payable or a full IHT account needs to be submitted (even if no tax is due), this adds complexity to the probate process. We charge an additional ÂŖ500 + VAT to cover the additional work involved.

If you are unsure, select No and we can discuss further when you contact us. We are not authorised to give tax advice, so please check any Inheritance Tax position with HMRC, an accountant or a tax adviser.
