Your First Appointment Explained

We know that people usually obtain legal advice when something has gone wrong or they need help addressing a big issue. As a result, your first meeting with your solicitor can seem quite daunting, but it needn’t be.

We’ve taken the time to answer some of the most common questions regarding your initial appointment in the hope we can put your mind at ease and help you to get the most out of the first appointment.

What should I take when I go to see my solicitor?

There are some basic items which we would recommend you always take to a first appointment, regardless of the legal matter you wish to discuss:

  • Identification documents (such as a passport or driving licence and a utility bill)

  • Pen and paper in case you want to make any notes

  • A list of questions that you have - it’s easy to forget things once you’re in the meeting.

  • Your diary in case you need to get another appointment arranged

Depending on the matter which you are seeking advice on we would also recommend that you bring the following:

It is always worth checking with you solicitor whether anything further is required as each person’s circumstances are different.

Why does my solicitor need my identification documents?

There are Anti-Money Laundering Regulations in place which mean that solicitors have to carry out strict checks on anyone they handle money for, even if it’s only for a payment of small bills. Solicitors also need to check that they are acting for the right person to avoid fraud or conflicts.

What should I wear to my appointment?

The short answer is your solicitor really won’t mind what you wear and most people just turn up in whatever they are wearing that day anyway. There is no need to dress smart unless you are going to court or attending a more formal meeting.

Will my Solicitor tell anyone what I tell them?

As with all professionals, Solicitors have very strict rules about confidentiality and will only share your information where they have your permission or if they have a legal obligation to do so. If you have any questions or concerns about this then you should feel free to ask your solicitor about this before you instruct them.
