Charitable gifts: Ogwen Valley mountain rescue

December 3, 2018

Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation is a registered charity, staffed entirely by volunteers. In this guest blog, they share a bit about their work and how gifts in Wills can support that.

Rescues in North Wales

The Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team provide a free search and rescue service to people in distress primarily in the mountains, uplands and rivers of Northern Snowdonia. The 50 or so volunteers respond to about 130 incidents per year at any time of day or night throughout the year in all weathers.

The primary operational area for this team includes the Glyderau, the vast uplands of the Carneddau range and Moel Siabod, just South of Capel Curig. The rocky summits of Tryfan attract 25% of these incidents.

Team members are mountaineers by sport but train in numerous skills required for search and rescue. These include technical rope rescue; swift water search and rescue; casualty care; search management and field skills; Defensive, off road and blue light driver training; fatal incident investigation and reporting; working with helicopters; winter and avalanche search and rescue; and other skills.

Whilst nearly half of the incidents are for un-injured persons, the team has to deal with numerous injuries, some more serious than others. These casualties may be under the care of team members for several hours in rugged terrain and poor weather. Good casualty care is therefore of utmost importance.

Sadly, there are a small number of fatalities every year. Not only do team members have to recover the bodies and carry out the Fatal Incident Investigation for the Coroner, they often have to care for bereaved relatives not only at the time but also on anniversaries.

Assistance elsewhere

During periods of extreme weather, the team supports the professional emergency services using their 4x4 vehicles, their casualty care training, their swift water rescue skills and search capabilities. Team members can also be asked to assist "out of area" for missing persons searches, some of which are multi-day such as the one for April Jones of Machynlleth. They have also assisted with flood rescue in Carlisle and York. Members have flown to the Republic of Ireland to assist with a full Winter conditions, search and rescue.

Funding the organisation

Alongside all of this work, they also have to raise funds for the £75K needed each year to run the charity and train and equip its members.

Contributions from various public sources provide about 5% of the annual turnover.  North Wales Police greatly assist by providing Personal Accident Insurance for all team members and paying towards the team radios and their licences.

But the rest of the funds must come from donations and this is where gifts in Will can benefit the organisation so much.
